Was the president right to file an appeal to the court injunction against don't ask don't tell?

Do you think the Justice Department, and by extension President Obama are selling out gay servicemembers by opposing the federal court ruling against Don't ask Don't Tell? Or are they right that this shouldn't be up to the courts, and rather congress to decide when and how to repeal the law? (or do you think it should never be repealled?)
